I don’t know if we need to post of this week. This week I spent about 3 hours calling fosters trying to find homes for a bunch of cats and one dog. In case anyone is interested we found a puppy that needs a forever home and two cats that are sisters and a little over two years old that need a new forever home. Also, this weekend I am tabling at Publix for Animal Safehouse from 10am-2pm.
I began my internship at New Image Youth Center bright and early yesterday at 7am. I work from 7am-11am M-Th and 7am-5pm on Fridays. I work with the elementary students implementing programs and ensuring their activities run smoothly. I also help with finances and paperwork of the non-profit in terms of food for the kids, donations/fund-raising, and field trips.
The New Image Youth Center did receive some bad news over the weekend. The New Image Youth Center had hopes of expanding their center but the building space will not be renovated and ready until mid summer. The space was created to give more room and space to the elementary and middle/high school groups.
In the meantime, we are making due with the space that we have! The first week of summer camp has been a success. I have amassed a lot of knowledge concerning non-profits from working with the director...and I get to play all day too, not too shabby!
I am happy to say that I was able to secure a storage unit for Animal Safehouse in Brevard County. I am currently assisting in in anyway I can for the art show at Logan's Bistro on June 30th. This includes making a Facebook event, advertising, and setting up in anyway I can. I have also been asking around for people who are available to foster pets.
This week we found out that Feminist Agenda Radio will not be starting during summer A, due to technical difficulties. The basic situation is that the equipment that streams the show is not working, therefore the show will not air online, also the recording/archive equipment is not working, so there is no way to record a show and then post it online. This is very much a downer but hopefully it will get fixed asap and we will be able to start up again summer B. I was able to get some hours done by doing some work with Animal Safehouse, Ashley and I went to pick up two cats and four kittens from a women and drop them off at a foster. The situation was actually quiet stressful, we met the women, who was obviously being abused. She looked as if she had been crying nonstop and had physical signs of being beat up. It was heart breaking to see her say by to animals that she valued as children and hear her telling them to please forgive her. I was literally fighting back tears it was hard to not feel for her and to know that many women don’t have the strength to leave a situation, give their pets to fosters, and go to a shelter alone. I don’t think I will be able to pick up a pet from the owner again, it was a very stressful situation for me, even though it was an eye opener. I am going to try to work with a few other groups in order to attain more hours since the radio show is not functioning.
This week I spent a good portion of my freetime doing research for Central Florida's Jobs With Justice. Denise has me updating information regarding the prices of Parking Decals for staff at various Florida colleges. We're working on updating this information so that it can be brought to UCF's attention with regards to how they treat their maintenance/custodial staff. I've also been working on creating an updated brochure that will represent the Central Florida JWJ branch specifically.
Denise told me that I'll more than likely be attending a JWJ meeting during this upcoming week, as well as sitting in on negotiations between UCF's labor union and UCF itself. I'm really excited to sit in on these negotiations, because it's an issue that's very close to my "home." I will also continue working on my research as well as the brochure that I was tasked to create.
I completed my service hours with YAYA. They are an offshoot of the Farm Worker's Ministry aimed at organizing young adults. It was a great experience! Lariza runs the show filling all positions herself with the support of volunteers. I had the chance to meet some of the teenagers she works with it. They came by her office with petitions they have been working on getting signed in support for the Dream Act. It was activism in the hands of teenagers. Advocates for legislation they are not even old enough to vote for. I got to do all the paperwork and organizing stuff that is time consuming and tedious. I could tell Lariza was very grateful for my service. We had great conversations about life and activism, organizing young people and the struggles all those bring. I walked away inspired and grateful for the opportunity. I feel like I made a friend and made a difference, what else can you ask for out of volunteering?
This week I spoke at a NOW workshop on Domestic Violence on behave of Animal Safehouse at the Public Library downtown (1.5). Through emailing and calling we were able to arrange fosters and transportation for eight cats (4). In addition I working on the Benefit Show that Animal Safehouse will be putting on at Logan's Bistro on June 30th (2).
Through the past week I have been consistently involved with the Simple Living Institute of Orlando. Once a month the organization hosts an Organic Growers meeting at Leu Gardens, and this month’s topic was Organic Pest Control. I went to the Econ Farm to build a powerpoint presentation explaining the prevention of pests and upkeep of garden plants and soils. I utilized this opportunity as an exercise in relaying a dense amount of information in a concise manner and format in which it can be easily viewed and understood. Many times with presentations, the speaker will proceed to explain general topics that the majority of the audience is already familiar with. By touching upon the ideas that are wide-spread and familiar, the audience can have a transition into focus on the topic without being bored or disappointed with information already known. I also attended the Organic Growers Meeting, documenting the event with photos and a blog posting at the Simple Living Institute blog, which can be found here: http://simplelivinginstitute.blogspot.com I’m also currently working out printing resources and flier distribution with the organization; progress thus far is successful!
I am a positive person with a lot of energy. I like to meet different people and enjoy learning about other communities and places. I love to travel. I usually travel abroad once or twice a year.
